To celebrate the end of our Chinese New Year activities, we organised a visit from Steve Bell’s Chinese Magic Dragon Show which went down a storm with residents and staff.
The magic show included loads of tricks which were highly interactive and engaged residents in various ways. For example, Steve carried out some amazing Paul Daniels card tricks and the residents were in awe of the handcuffs tricks of Harry Houdini that Steve also performed.
Louise Elgie, a carer at Cramlington House, said: “What a fantastic way to end the Chinese New Year celebrations. Over the last two weeks, residents have learnt so much about the Chinese culture and got involved in all sorts of activities including baking and arts and crafts.
“Such activities are brilliant for both physical and mental wellbeing. They exercise fine motor skills which are vital for maintaining independence and also encourage interaction, relaxation and enjoyment.”
As well as magic and tricks, the show included a selection of beautiful oriental artefacts such as hand painted fans, Chinese silks and carved dragons. These fascinated and intrigued residents who were keen to learn more about them.
Magic performances are a great activity for residents because they really encourage interaction, help residents to relax and enjoy the performance while experiencing emotions of shock, surprise and wonder.
Olivia Harper, who lives at Cramlington House, said: “The afternoon was really fun, and I had a great time. I didn’t expect the magician to be so magic! I couldn’t believe the tricks he was doing. I am not a great believer in magic but Steve has changed my mind. I do like cards and I was very impressed (and shocked!) with Steve’s card tricks. It was also good to see all the different Chinese items Steve brought with him and learn more about them.”
