We do love a cookery session at West Farm and this one definitely did not disappoint!
With the weather starting to turn, residents rolled up their sleeves to bake the ultimate delicious comfort food – scones. There’s a lot involved when it comes to creating the perfect scone including kneading and rolling the pastry to perfection, cutting out the shapes and making sure the key ingredient is added into the mix whether that’s raisins, cheese or mixed berries.
Tracey White, our West Farm Activities Coordinator, said: “Oh, residents really do love a bit of baking! It’s such a great activity for their wellbeing and that includes their physical, social and mental health.
“Physically, they are using key motor skills that are needed to maintain independence as long as possible – the rolling, kneading and measuring all exercise such skills.”
From a mental wellbeing perspective, baking encourages social bonding and self-expression, working as team to bake some wonderful treats and ensuring they get the look and taste just right. Importantly, cooking also activates our senses – touch, smell, sight and taste which is really beneficial for residents as they can enjoy the sweet aromas, stimulating their visual senses and tastebuds too when we sampled the beautiful scones, fresh out of the oven.”
Baking is one of our favourite activities and we’re looking forward to sharing with you some more of our winter warmers as we head towards darker nights and colder days.
