To recognise Mental Health Awareness Week, residents and carers from West Farm took part in a long walk around the local Longbenton area. It was a beautiful day to get outdoors and highlight how engaging in physical exercise and being immersed in the beauty of nature provides a multitude of health benefits.
Regular physical exercise has a transformative impact on the physical and mental health of older adults. Walking, in particular, stimulates circulation, improves cardiovascular health, and strengthens muscles, leading to increased vitality and overall wellbeing. Additionally, studies have shown that outdoor activities can have significant positive effects on mental health, reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. The combination of exercise and exposure to nature stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood-enhancing chemicals, promoting a sense of happiness and relaxation.
Zahra Karimi, our manager at West Farm, said: “For our residents, participating in the walk offered a refreshing change of environment, rejuvenating their spirits and enhancing their mental wellbeing. The experience of breathing in the fresh air, feeling the warmth of the sun, and admiring the wonders of nature uplift everyone’s mood and promoted a sense of serenity and peace.
“The activity also created a strong sense of community and connection among residents and it was lovely to bump into members of the local community and enjoy some chit-chat. The shared experience fostered camaraderie, encouraged social interaction, and reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation. Engaging in activities together cultivates a supportive environment where residents can share their stories, build friendships, and find solace in one another’s company. It was a wonderful afternoon which residents and care staff alike enjoyed.”
