West farm residents have enjoyed a live singing session from Katie West, which, as always, went down really well!
Katie West is a regular visitor to West Farm, where she sings a range of well-known songs from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. She provides a really good session to residents who are fully engaged and love to interact with her throughout her performance, joining in during songs that they’re familiar with and even having a little dance or two as well!
Sarah Jane Avery, our wellbeing champion at West Farm, said: “We really do look forward to Katie West’s visits; she knows the residents well and knows what songs to perform to ensure they get the most out of it and remain engaged for the entire session.”
Singing and live entertainment is a great activity for our residents because of the many health benefits it provides so we ensure that it forms a key part of the specialised activities programme that we plan carefully for all residents.
Following live performances, residents are relaxed, happy and enjoy discussing the session, their favourite songs and why they like them. This helps them to recall a memory linked to a specific song from a particular period in their life which is a really important element of their care. Remembering past occasions and also creating new memories from the visits singers such as Katie provides is crucial too and they can share these moments with family and friends who visit them.
Mary Burns, a resident at West Farm who really enjoys Katie’s shows, said: “I really look forward to seeing Katie as she sings my favourite songs from the 60s. It reminds me of when I was a young girl and I used to go out dancing with my friends on a Saturday night. The good old days as I like to call them!”
