As Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day, approaches our residents at Cramlington House have been very hard at work! Remembrance Day honours soldiers who have died in the line of duty since World War 1. It’s a day that’s close to some of our resident’s hearts and minds as they remember war time Britain and often share their memories of growing up during a world war.
To mark Remembrance Day, we’ve been saving lots of plastic bottles which we have used to create a Remembrance Day display. With each bottle, we have cut off the bottom and then painted it red to make a poppy. We have them glued them to a display that’s taken pride of place in our reception area at Cramlington House.
Kim Stubbs, our wellbeing champion at Cramlington House, said: “This is such a fantastic activity to do with residents as it not only reminds them of their history but making the poppies and painting them is great for their fine motor skills which are important for maintaining independence such as being able to tie shoelaces or button up a shirt. The activity also provides great mental and social benefits too, providing an opportunity for residents to come together, socialise and enjoy a shared interest in creating something that they have all been a part of. What a brilliant afternoon we had – we hope you like the final display, which we think is very impressive!”
