Painting is a favourite activity enjoyed by residents and its range of physical, emotional and social health benefits should not be underestimated.
Painting and similar activities form a regular part of our activity programmes at both Cramlington House and West Farm and residents get so much out of the sessions. We really do love a spot of painting and you’ll often see lots of resident artwork adorning the walls of our homes!
As our West Farm Manager Donna Sarin explains: “Painting is an excellent activity physically especially for fine motor skills because it exercises the core muscles and joints needed to do everyday movements such as buttoning up a shirt or blouse, tying shoelaces and using a knife and fork.
“From a mental health and well-being perspective, it works wonders too. After a session of painting, residents are visibly more relaxed, have much lower levels of anxiety and feel generally more comfortable and confident too in their interactions with others about their painting and conversations beyond that.
“Such an activity involves a high level of concentration, patience and focus from participating residents which are all qualities that help to improve their overall wellbeing. The residents in this particular session really enjoyed themselves – just look at the wonderful creations they’ve made!”
