Residents at Cramlington House have been enjoying keeping our feathered friends well fed and nourished this summer by making wholesome and delicious bird food for them.
The garden and grounds at Cramlington House are a popular place for birds to visit and enjoy a bite or two to eat so our residents were keen to make them something a bit different to standard bird food by preparing suet balls and fruit treats.
Kim Stubbs, our Wellbeing Champion at Cramlington House, said: “Not only is baking a great activity for residents mentally – it’s a great way to relax, interact and enjoy an art – it’s also really good for them physically because cooking techniques such as cutting, chopping, mixing and rolling dough, exercise fine motor skills which are vital for maintaining day to day independence – skills we need to tie shoelaces for example, or do up the buttons of a shirt.”
Residents have really enjoyed taking part in this activity and seeing the birds enjoy the lovely summer foods they’ve patiently made, which has brought big smiles to their faces.
Kim added: “This activity is a continuation of our nature-based theme this summer, following the bird box making residents completed recently. We’re probably the most popular garden in Cramlington given the number of birds that visit on a weekly basis to sample the yummy homemade food and beautiful bird boxes. Word has definitely got around as there seem to be more and more birds coming to visit us!”
