At Cramlington House, we have a very active intergenerational programme, which is specifically planned to ensure our residents mix with people of all ages and generations. Every Friday, for example, Little Movers visit us which is so much fun!
Little Movers is a preschool dance and movement class and each week they visit to show us their latest moves and enjoy a natter and time with residents and staff too. As well as entertainment, it brings so many mutual benefits to residents and the children. For residents, the engagement and interaction with the children really is priceless. They lift moods and bring contentment to residents.
The children also benefit; for example, one little girl was slightly nervous during her first visit to our home but one of the residents made her feel incredibly welcome and they sat and cuddled and talked the whole session. Now, when the little girl sees the resident each week, she makes a beeline for her and they have become the best of friends, which is truly wonderful to see.
The activity is different each week and both the children and the adults really look forward to the occasion. They’ve developed great friendships which is vital for wellbeing at any age and it’s great to be able to bring generations together in a mutually beneficial way. Indeed, research shows that interaction of the young with the old has extremely positive effects on the wellbeing of both generations.
Kim Stubbs, our wellbeing champion at Cramlington House, said: “Little Movers really is a highlight of our week; the interaction and bonds that have developed between residents and the children really does melt your heart. It’s amazing for our residents because the children make them laugh, smile and really engage with them. The children really benefit too by making friends and enjoying a good old natter!”
