North East knitters are being asked to get their knitting game on and make woollen poppies in an attempt to cover the war memorial at Old Eldon Square in the red flower.
The campaign is spearheaded by the Evening Chronicle and the aim is to blanket Old Eldon Square memorial in knitted poppies to mark the end of the First World War and commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for our country.
Volunteers are very much needed to help crochet and knit as many poppies as they can to help make the scene look as spectacular as possible, with the paper calling on community groups, clubs, knitting circles, schools, crafting groups, guide and scout groups to get involved!
We really want to do our bit, so we are asking family and friends of residents and our team if they would kindly help make some knitted poppies. We have organised some knitting sessions, taking place at both Cramlington House and West Farm in the coming weeks, where our residents will be helping to make some poppies too which you’re more than welcome to join! We also have patterns for you to do at home if you prefer.
On Sunday November 11, a service will be held at Old Eldon Square’s War Memorial that will mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War, along with a parade of serving and veteran cadet forces as well as the array of gorgeous knitted poppies. If it all comes together, it’s going to look incredible!
We need all poppies by Sunday November 4th so get those knitting needles at the ready!
