How We Keep Our Residents Warm in Severe Weather

At Craig Healthcare, the wellbeing and comfort of our residents is at the heart of everything we do – and this becomes especially important during periods of severe winter weather. As temperatures drop, our teams work proactively to ensure every resident stays warm, safe, and comfortable, no matter how harsh the conditions outside may be.

Our approach begins long before winter arrives. Each home undergoes seasonal checks to ensure heating systems are functioning efficiently, insulation is secure, and all communal and private areas maintain a consistent, cosy temperature. We also ensure that residents have access to warm clothing, blankets, and winter bedding, and we encourage layering to help maintain body heat comfortably.

Daily monitoring plays a key role. Staff regularly check room temperatures and adjust heating as needed, ensuring no area becomes too cold or overheated. Residents who may be more vulnerable to the cold receive additional support, such as extra blankets, warm drinks throughout the day, and gentle reminders to wear appropriate clothing. Our kitchens also play their part, preparing hearty, warming meals and soups that provide comfort as well as nutrition.

Lucy Craig, Director of Craig Healthcare, emphasises the importance of this seasonal care. “Keeping our residents warm isn’t just about physical comfort, it’s about ensuring they feel safe, cared for, and supported during the coldest months of the year,” she says.

“Our teams work incredibly hard to create a warm, homely environment where residents can relax and enjoy winter without worry.”

In addition to physical warmth, at Craig Healthcare, we focus on emotional warmth too. Winter can sometimes feel isolating, so our activity teams plan plenty of indoor events, games, crafts, and social gatherings to keep spirits high. Whether it’s a cosy movie afternoon, a baking session, or simply sharing stories over a hot chocolate, these moments help residents stay connected and uplifted.

We also maintain close communication with families, keeping them informed about our winter procedures and encouraging them to reach out if they have any concerns about their loved ones.

Winter may bring its challenges, but with thoughtful planning, dedicated staff, and a strong sense of community, Craig Healthcare ensures that every resident feels warm, supported, and truly at home.
