Holywell House Care Centre residents were treated to a heartwarming surprise as they enjoyed visits from a delightful range of animals recently, including a friendly pony, a cuddly guinea pig, and a sociable hen.
The residents absolutely loved the visit and there were a lot of smiles and laughter amongst them all. Animal therapy plays a key role in care provision at Holywell House, especially for our residents living with dementia.
The presence of animals can ignite memories and emotions, stimulate communication, and provide comfort and reassurance. It creates a bridge to access residents’ memories, emotions, and communicative capacities that sometimes become concealed in the journey through dementia.
Julie McMurrough, our manager at Holywell House said: “Seeing the residents light up when the animals entered was so moving. There’s an undeniable bond between humans and animals that taps into our innate need for connection. Particularly for our residents with dementia, animals provide a gentle, non-judgmental companionship that soothes and uplifts them in ways sometimes humans can’t.”
