We absolutely love baking and Christmas provides the perfect excuse to do more of it! Shortbread is a favourite treat for our residents so a few of them were keen to create some delicious Christmas inspired shortbread to enjoy with a hot cuppa.
Baking is not only good for physical skills – especially for using and maintaining fine motor skills that are needed for everyday tasks such as doing up buttons on a shirt and tying shoelaces – it’s also amazing for mental health too.
Kim Stubbs, our activities manager at Cramlington House, said: “Baking is a fab exercise to do as residents are really involved in the activity and keen to make the perfect treats – in this case, Christmas tree shaped shortbread.
“They concentrated on kneading the dough and rolling it, ensuring it was in tip top condition to create the short bread shapes. It was great to see the high levels of concentration and their commitment to create the most perfect shortbread – which it really was!”
“Baking really is great for the mind and soul and we’re focused on providing a range of baking activities for residents during these times when we can’t do the usual type of activities we do such as enjoying lunch at the social club or fish and chips at the local garden centre. We are all looking forward to the return of those days.”
