West Farm residents have enjoyed so many incredible outings this month, including a very special visit to Beamish Museum!
Beamish Museum is extremely dementia friendly and it even has its own 1940s cottage, Orchard Cottage, which has been specially adapted for those receiving residential and dementia care.
The cosy and warm cottage has retained all of the familiar surroundings of a typical 1940s home which many residents remember and have memories of when growing up. Importantly, it also has the same sounds and smells that really help residents to reminisce about their past while they create memories for their future.
Sarah Jane Avery, wellbeing champion at West Farm, said: “We absolutely love Beamish! They’re so dementia friendly, I wish every visit could last forever! The cottage is full to the brim with era specific items such as a real coal fire, piano, lots of ‘nik naks’ and of course the all-important tea pot, complete with tea cosy, to enjoy a cup of tea and homemade toast together, which is exactly what we did.”
Residents also enjoyed a stroll around the grounds on what was a gorgeous autumnal day as well as a vintage bus and tram ride.
