There was plenty of excitement at Holywell House Care Centre recently as residents welcomed two very special visitors – Herbert the Hedgehog and everyone’s favourite four-legged friend, Wag Dog Ted.
From the moment they arrived, the pair captured hearts across the home. Residents were delighted to spend time gently stroking Herbert’s prickly coat and enjoying cuddles and companionship with Ted, whose calm and affectionate nature brought smiles wherever he went.
As residents learned more about Herbert and Ted, many were reminded of cherished pets they had owned throughout their lives. Stories of faithful dogs, mischievous cats, family rabbits and other much-loved companions soon flowed, with memories shared between residents, relatives and staff.
Animal-assisted experiences are recognised for the positive impact they can have on emotional wellbeing. Spending time with animals can help reduce anxiety, encourage communication, stimulate memories and promote relaxation, particularly for people living with dementia. Even residents who are usually quieter found themselves smiling, chatting and reaching out to interact with the special guests.
The visit also offered valuable sensory experiences, from feeling Ted’s soft fur to carefully observing Herbert’s unique movements and behaviour. These gentle interactions encouraged curiosity and engagement while providing moments of comfort and reassurance.
Staff were equally delighted to see the positive effect the visit had throughout the home. Watching residents laugh together, exchange stories and enjoy such simple but meaningful moments perfectly reflected Holywell’s commitment to creating enriching experiences that support both physical and emotional wellbeing.
