Cramlington House was treated to a visit from the team at Discovery Zoo recently and it did not disappoint! Among the special guests were a gentle tortoise, a slithery snake, a gorgeous gecko and an adorable guinea pig. The visit not only created a memorable experience for residents but it also had a positive impact on their physical and mental wellbeing, demonstrating the therapeutic power of animals.
Animal interactions have been shown to have numerous positive effects on physical health. As the residents handled the tortoise, snake, gecko and guinea pig, they engaged in gentle movements, such as stroking and holding the animals which create a soothing effect and help residents to feel calm and relaxed. There’s also a benefit to motor skills as the act of handling and maneuvering the animals helps improve fine motor skills, promoting dexterity and coordination.
Talking about the visit, Kim Stubbs, our activities coordinator at Cramlington House said: “Animals have a unique ability to uplift spirits and evoke happiness and that was obvious on the day. The residents’ faces lit up with pure delight as they interacted with the tortoise, snake, gecko and guinea pig, creating a positive atmosphere. The shared experience of interacting with the animals also encouraged residents to engage in conversation, reminisce, and connect with one another, fostering a sense of community and belonging. What a wonderful day.”
